What is a Watershed?

What is a Watershed?

A Watershed is an area of land where all the water on it drains into a larger body of water, like an ocean or a river. All the water traveling through the soil, in ponds and streams, and water underground all make up the watershed.

Water is a common solvent, which means that it is affected by everything it touches. Pollutants that we use on land can easily end up in our water. To find out what you can do to prevent pollution to your watershed go to How You Can Help.

The Juniata Watershed

The Juniata Watershed consists of all the land under which water empties into the Juniata River. The Juniata River enters into the Susquehanna River which is a part of a larger watershed called the Chesapeake Bay Watershed. Smaller watersheds make up larger ones and cover the surface of all the land on earth. Wherever you are standing you are always in a watershed.
