To all coaches. I didn't think you'd be reading the Announcements so we placed a direct link to lost and found. This was the best year ever in the small number of items left after the tournament. However, there were several expensive items left behind:
You can either contact me by email (pauline@juniata.edu) or by phone (814-641-3630) to describe the item and we'll find some way to return it
To all coaches:
Specific questions may be addressed to Jim Hasse: james.a.hasse@usa.dupont.com, 6077680247 cell.
To all B division coaches - The physical science lab test stations will use box fans. The set-up is identical to the set-up posted on the National Science Olympiad website.
To All Coaches - Unfortunately, except for one event, we were unable to find supervisors for the Trial Events. Because of this the following events have been canceled; Keep the Heat-B, Subterranean Puzzles-C, and Wholly Moley-C. The only Trial Event that will run is Microbe Mission-B. We're really sorry to have to make this announcement but, as mentioned, we were unable to find event supervisors for the three canceled events.
To all B division coaches - For the competition, the teams will be kept together at all times. There are two sections, one in the planetarium and the other written. Everything on either test is listed in the Coaches Manual for this year's competition. I will be providing red-tinted flashlights for everyone.
To all coaches - We still need a supervisor and judge for three of four trial events. Microbe Mission has a supervisor (thanks, Jane) but we still need coverage in Keep the Heat-B, Subterranean Puzzles-C, and Wholly Moley-C. If we don't have volunteers to supervise these events we will, unfortunately, have to cancel them. Please contact the site director (pauline@juniata.edu) if you are interested in supervising.
To all C division coaches - Students are expected to impound devices before 9:00 AM. At your appointed time (12, 1, or 2), you will take the written part of the exam in the first 25-30 minutes. At the completion of the written exam, all teams in the room will do the 5 time trials together. There will be 1 minute to record the time and reset for the next time trial. Don't forget to look on the soinc.org web page for the zip files that will be used to do the timer. Good luck to all of you.
To all B division coaches - A clarification on Trial Events; for B division the event is Keep the Heat, NOT Keep the Heat 1994.
Students must sign up for a launch time at Knox Field before 9 AM. I will be using the Pitsco AquaPort Competition Launcher. I will be using the official national scoring sheet for the event. Be aware of construction and safety guidelines. In particular, carbonated beverage bottles must be used. Water bottles are not acceptable. Commercial model rockets parts may not be used. This supervisor will consider any parachutes or recovery devices that are not "home-made" to be in violation of the spirit intended under rule 2e. Be aware of national rules clarifications for this event. Specifically, take note that ALL energy imparted to the rocket must ORIGINATE from the water/air pressure combination. No other potential or kinetic energy source is permitted for ANY purpose. Winders, rubber-bands, etc. must be in the zero-energy state before the launch. See rule 2g along with its clarifications.
To all coaches - There will be four trial events this year, two for B division and two for C division. They can be found under 2009 Schedules - Trial Events on the State Tournament web page. Their descriptions can be found on the National Olympiad web site. However, we can ONLY run the events if we have volunteers to supervise and judge each event so to volunteer contact the site director at pauline@juniata.edu.
To all B Division coaches - The hands-on part of the event will have to do with OPTICS. The rest will be a fill-in-the-blank and multiple choice test on other wave properties.
Unloading of buses and vans on the morning of the state tournament on May 1st has changed from the procedure outlined in the initial letter you received at your regional tournament. Buses and vans will still proceed up Moore Street to 19th street and enter campus via 19th Street. Buses will NOT unload on Moore Street as in the past. Instead all buses/vans will be directed by Public Safety to proceed to Kennedy Sports and Recreation Complex on Scott Street via 19th Street where all students will unload then the drivers will be directed to their parking areas. Pick up of students after the closing ceremony will remain the same as outlined in the initial letter.
To all coaches - For the Compute This event, the Excel version for Windows - Excel 2007 ver SLSX and for Mac - Excel 12.1.2 . . . The browser is Firefox ver 3.05 for both windows & Mac.
To all coaches, please find attached a rules clarification for the event and also the scoresheet that will be used in the event.
To all coaches - PLEASE check with the network administrators for your school district and have them allow email messages that end with @juniata.edu and/or have Science Olympiad in the Subject line to "go through" to you. Our student directors are having a real problem contacting you. This is EXTREMELY important if any of you are serving as an event supervisor . . . the directors must be able to contact you. Thank you!
